Frequently asked questions
Everything you want to know about Dog Socky.
Maat en Pasvorm
You measure the width of the paw, not the length. Here's how:
- Have your dog stand upright on a flat surface, with its full weight on all four paws
- Place a sheet of paper under the front paw and trace the outline of the paw, or place a ruler next to the paw
- Measure the widest distance of the paw print, from one side of the paw to the other
- Read the value in centimeters
Always measure while your dog is standing upright and its paw is flat on the ground. If you lift the paw and measure it while it's in the air, the toes will be squeezed together and you will get a value that is too small.
Are you unsure about the size? Always choose the larger size. A slightly looser sock that is fastened properly fits better than one that is too tight.
Use the size chart below as a starting point. Always measure your dog yourself for the most accurate choice, or use the size calculator and know the result in 30 seconds.
- S (4.3 to 4.9 cm): Jack Russell, Dachshund, Bichon Frisé, Westie, Miniature Schnauzer
- M (4.9 to 6.3 cm): Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, French Bulldog, Welsh Corgi, Whippet
- L (6.3 to 7.3 cm): Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Dalmatian, Samoyed, English Bulldog
- XL (7.3 to 8.6 cm): Labrador, Husky, Boxer, Malinois
Please note that every dog is different. A Labrador can wear an L or an XL depending on its size and build. Measuring always provides the most accurate choice.
Always choose the larger size. The Velcro allows for adjustment and a slightly looser sock will stay on better than one that is too tight. Too tight is always worse: it cuts off circulation, is uncomfortable, and your dog will pull them off more quickly.
For dogs with thick or long fur between their toes, choose one size larger than the measured width indicates. The fur takes up extra space in the sock, and a slightly looser sock will be more comfortable.
This applies especially to Golden Retrievers, Bichon Frises, Poodles, Shih Tzus, Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Goldendoodles, and Labradoodles.
For dogs with short fur on their paws, such as Boxers, Beagles, Pugs, or short-haired Chihuahuas, simply measure without correction.
Yes, you can. For some dogs, the front and hind legs are slightly different in width. Simply order two packs in the sizes that fit. Do you have any questions? Send us a message via info@dogsocky.com.
Yes. Dogs with webbed feet, such as Labradors, Newfoundlands, and Portuguese Water Dogs, have a wider paw print than other dogs of comparable size. When in doubt, choose the larger size.
Werking en Effectiviteit
Anti-slip dog socks, also known as gripper socks or grip socks for dogs, are soft socks with a special grip layer on the underside, preventing your dog from slipping on smooth floors. Dog Socky socks have this grip layer on both the top and bottom of the sock. If the sock twists while walking, your dog still has grip because the top is also equipped with the anti-slip pattern. A soft Velcro strap keeps the sock neatly in place. Each package contains 4 socks, one for each paw.
A dog shoe has a hard or thick sole and protects the entire paw, including the underside. This is useful outdoors on gravel, ice, or hot pavements. A dog sock is softer, quicker to put on, and more comfortable for all-day indoor use. Dog Socky is a sock for indoor use. For outdoor use on rough terrain, we recommend a shoe.
Each Dog Socky pack contains 4 socks. That's a complete set for your dog's four paws. Not 2 and not 1 pair of 2 pieces: 4 socks so that every paw is protected.
Tip: if you order two packs right away, you can alternate them. While one set is drying after washing, the other is ready for use.
Dog Socky socks are for:
- Senior dogs aged 7 years and older who become unsteady on slippery floors such as parquet, tiles or laminate
- Older dogs who have difficulty getting up or whose hind legs slip on a smooth floor
- Dogs with osteoarthritis or hip dysplasia who need stability when walking
- Dogs recovering from surgery on their legs or joints
- Dogs who constantly lick their paws due to allergies or stress
- Young dogs and puppies who don't yet have a grip on a slippery floor
- Anyone who wants to protect their parquet or laminate from nail scratches
Dog Socky is an indoor product. For prolonged outdoor use on asphalt or rough terrain, we recommend a dog shoe.
For most dogs, yes, if the size is right and the floor is dry. The silicone dots significantly increase friction on slippery surfaces. Dogs that have been struggling with slipping for a long time often notice the difference after the very first wear.
One caveat: socks are a supplement to good nail length, not a replacement. Overly long nails push the toe knuckles upward, causing the paw to make less contact with the floor. Regular nail trimming enhances the effect.
Older dogs with hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis constantly slip on smooth floors with every step, which puts extra strain on their joints and worsens the pain. The grip of Dog Socky reduces that slipping and the compensatory movement that accompanies it.
It is not a medical treatment and does not replace a vet or physiotherapist, but as a daily comfort improvement at home, an anti-slip dog sock is one of the most practical aids you can use. Many vets recommend anti-slip socks as a first step alongside medical treatment.
Yes. Dog Socky forms a soft barrier between the paw and the mouth. For dogs that constantly lick their paws due to contact allergies, skin conditions or stress, the sock reduces access to the skin and helps break the licking habit.
Always combine this with the advice of your vet for the underlying cause. The socks relieve the symptoms but do not treat the cause.
Dog Socky can serve as a soft protective layer after an operation, for example, to prevent your dog from licking his wound or to keep the paw warm.
Never use the socks on an open wound or immediately after an operation without the consent of your veterinarian. If there is any doubt about infection or circulation, discontinue use immediately.
For all smooth indoor floors: parquet, laminate, tiles, vinyl, marble, concrete, and linoleum. The socks are not designed for wet floors such as in the shower or bath, nor for prolonged use on asphalt or rough outdoor terrain.
No. The sizes and fit are designed for dog paws. Cats have a different paw shape and react very differently to having something on their paws. We do not recommend using them on cats.
Yes. Puppies do not yet have a full grip on slippery floors and can fall, which is bad for developing joints. Dog Socky helps prevent falls and gives your puppy confidence in the house. Puppies grow quickly, so recheck the size after four to six weeks.
Currently, Dog Socky anti-slip dog socks are only available in black. Black was deliberately chosen because it effectively hides dirt and complements any dog's fur.
Gewenning en Gebruik
Here's how to put on the socks in four steps:
- Open the Velcro completely
- Hold the sock with both hands to form a funnel, so the opening is wide
- Gently slide the paw into the sock until the paw pads rest fully on the sole
- Fold up the cuff and close the Velcro
Always check afterwards: can you comfortably slide one finger under the Velcro? If so, it fits well. If not? Loosen the strap a little.
Practical tip: trim your dog's nails before putting on the socks. This provides a better fit and makes the socks last longer.
Most dogs need two to five wearing sessions to get used to the feeling. The very first time, some dogs walk a little exaggeratedly high or shake their paws. This is completely normal and will soon disappear.
Tips for a smooth acclimatization: on the first day, start with ten to fifteen minutes. Put the socks on just before something your dog enjoys, such as eating or playtime. Give a reward immediately after the socks are on. After three to five sessions, most dogs walk completely normally with them.
Yes, perfectly normal. Dogs navigate using sensory feedback from their paw pads. As soon as that input is blocked by a sock, the dog interprets this as a strange sensation and reacts with exaggerated high steps or by stopping. Most dogs adjust their walking pattern after a few sessions.
Three common causes:
- Wrong size: too tight causes discomfort, too loose feels strange. Remeasure the paw.
- Not used to it yet: start with shorter periods and reward more.
- Too little distraction: put the socks on just before an activity so your dog doesn't get a chance to think about them.
Never take the socks off in response to protest, as this teaches your dog that resistance works. If none of these solutions help after two weeks, please contact us at info@dogsocky.com.
During the first sessions, we gradually increase the wearing time: for the first two days, a maximum of two hours per session, from day three to five, a maximum of four hours, and from day six, your dog can wear the socks all day indoors.
After two hours of initial use, check how the paws feel. Are they normally warm? No swelling? Then everything is fine. Remove the socks immediately if you notice a swollen or abnormally cold paw.
Dog Socky is not intended for overnight use. Is your dog going to sleep? Then the socks come off.
Veiligheid en Gezondheid
No, provided the size is right. Dog Socky has two mechanisms that prevent the socks from falling off:
Double-sided silicone grip, on both the top and bottom of the sock. If the sock twists while walking, there is still grip because the top also has the anti-slip pattern.
Elastic velcro strap, with which you can adjust how tight the sock holds. The elastic always moves with the paw. With the correct size and if applied properly, Dog Socky socks easily stay in place for eight hours.
This is a real concern with socks that have hard or rigid Velcro straps. With Dog Socky, the Velcro is elastic, so you determine how tight it fits. The elastic always gives a little with movement, so there is never constant pressure on the paw.
The golden test: you should always be able to comfortably slide one finger under the Velcro. Can't do that? Loosen the strap a little.
When using for the first time, check the paw after two hours. Is the paw swollen, abnormally cold, or is your dog restless? Remove the sock immediately and consult your veterinarian.
Yes, if you close the velcro correctly. The velcro closes around the cuff of the sock, above the bunion. Make sure you don't close the strap too low or too close to the bunion. After the first wear, check that there is no pressure or friction on the bunion.
The materials are non-toxic, but chewing will damage the sock and can release small pieces of silicone. Therefore, always use the socks under your supervision. Take them off when you leave the room and certainly before your dog goes to sleep.
Does your dog chew on its paws structurally? This may also indicate a skin problem or allergy. Discuss this with your vet.
For a short trip to the garden on dry grass or a patio, this is not a problem. However, the socks are not designed for prolonged outdoor use on asphalt, wet surfaces, or rough terrain. On such surfaces, the silicone pattern wears off quickly. After outdoor use, remove the socks immediately and let them dry thoroughly before storing them.
The socks are made of 80% cotton, 15% nylon and 5% elastane. The anti-slip pattern is made of thick double-sided silicone and is latex-free. No aggressive dyes have been used. The material is soft, breathable and suitable for dogs with sensitive skin.
Yes. Wash the socks at 20 to 30 degrees Celsius on a normal cycle. Close the Velcro straps before washing so they don't snag on other laundry. Preferably put the socks in a laundry bag for delicates.
After washing, air-dry the socks. Do not tumble dry: the heat will damage the silicone pattern and the elastic of the Velcro straps.
With daily indoor use, the socks will last an average of three to six months. This depends on how active your dog is and whether they also use the socks outdoors.
You can extend their lifespan by alternating two sets so that each set gets enough drying time, and by only using the socks indoors.
Replace the socks if you see any of these signs:
- The silicone anti-slip pattern has become smooth and no longer feels ridged
- The Velcro no longer fastens properly, even after cleaning
- The sock is so stretched out that it no longer stays in place
- There are holes or tears in the fabric
